Guest Post, Brandon Epstein – What does it mean to be spiritual?

Spirituality is something that I’ve never been into. I’ve always considered it something religious. However, I’m hearing more and more about it, and not just from the crazy yoga people. Now I’m hearing about it from performance podcasts, business articles, and everywhere else I never expected to hear about spirituality. So, in order to familiarize myself (and you, the audience) with spirituality, I decided to ask Brandon Epstein, an Austin-based friend of mine, and the founder of Entrepreneur Fitness (a top 10 ranked podcast in health and fitness in the U.S.) to write a blog on the subject. Here are his words. Enjoy!

Hello Man Flow nation. Brandon here from entrepreneurfitness.com. Your courageous leader Dean asked me to write a post sharing with ya’ll with it truly means to be spiritual. I talk about something I call spiritual fitness quite a bit over on my blog and podcast, so I am happy to share the good with ya’ll as well. I’m not big into re creating the wheel so let me share with you the exact definition of spirituality.

Spirituality is a process of personal transformation, either in accordance with traditional religious ideals, or, increasingly, oriented on subjective experience and psychological growth independently of any specific religious context. In a more general sense, it may refer to almost any kind of meaningful activity or blissful experience. There is no single, widely-agreed definition for the concept.

There ya go. So as you read it can be a religious activity, but it does not need to be. It’s more so about committing to something greater than yourself and engaging in intentional personal growth.

We hear a ton of inspirational stories about people using religious spirituality to achieve greatness or overcome adversity. Just think about the last time you heard someone give a speech after winning an academy award or championship game. One of the first things that many of them do is thank god. This is an awesome example of people who use spirituality to propel themselves to greatness that they would have never dreamed of achieving without the help of said god.

Something that gets lost in translation is that even people who do not subscribe to a certain religion can subscribe to spirituality and gain the same epic results. All you have to do is commit yourself to something greater than yourself. Maybe that’s a goal you’ve set for yourself, maybe it’s your family, maybe it’s a change in the world that you want to see. Not matter what it is; if you can align your identity with this purpose you’ve set out for yourself, that is spirituality in it’s strongest form.

Taking this a step further you can start to take actions that are in alignment with your newly claimed identity, which in turn fuels your spirituality even more so. I like to call this training your spiritual fitness. The more you can align your purpose (or thing that is greater than yourself) with your identity and then with your daily actions; the easier it’s going to be for you to create the outcome your desire.

I know I know, I’m talking about something as sacred as spirituality like it’s just another tool, but isn’t it? Isn’t spirituality in even the godliest sense just a tool to help us feel like we have a purpose in this world? This is just my perspective on the manner and I absolutely respect differing opinions, but when I see an effective tool I use it. I use spirituality as an incredible tool for achieving greatness and living a fulfilling life. If you have been turned off by the word spirituality in the past hopefully I have helped turn you back on by showing you just how powerful it can be in helping you craft a life of purpose.

  1. The thing I love about being spiritual is that it is all about inner strength and self discovery to make you a better person. It has nothing to do with religion and I am thankful for that as I cannot relate to any one specific religion.
