Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions 10 questions
  • What is yoga?

Ask two people and you’ll get two different answers. If you haven’t figured out yet, Man Flow Yoga is different from typical yoga. For us it’s a form of physical fitness that includes a variety of bodyweight exercises, calisthenics, breathing exercises, and stretching to develop overall strength, endurance, core stability, balance, and flexibility.

  • Is yoga religious or spiritual?

Yoga is not religious. Yoga is a form of philosophy. Around here it’s a form of exercise. You can still be faithful to your religion or beliefs and practice yoga.

  • Do I need to meditate to do yoga?

While many types of yoga make the physical practice of yoga inseparable from meditation, you are not required to meditate if you just want to do yoga. We do however encourage mindfulness, so call that what you will. Here’s a helpful blog on the subject, entitled Separating Yoga from Meditation.

  • Can women do Man Flow Yoga?

Absolutely. While Man Flow Yoga was created with men and their specific needs in mind. it isn’t just for men. It’s for anybody that wants to experience the benefits that fitness-based yoga can provide. Our workouts reflect what most guys typically want out of a workout (more upper body, more muscle building), and contain modifications for poses that are difficult for us inflexible guys. There are many women that enjoy Man Flow Yoga because of the fitness-centric aspect, not to mention that women can be inflexible too – the toll of a sedentary life affects us all.

  • How often should I do yoga?

The answer to this question depends on your current level of fitness, your fitness routine, and your fitness goals (not to mention many other personal factors). Our suggestion is that if you are just starting a workout routine and aren’t doing anything else in addition to yoga, start with 20-30 minutes of yoga every other day, and then increase from there. If you’ve already been exercising regularly, and plan on incorporating yoga into your existing fitness routine, make sure that you’re doing yoga at least twice per week for a minimum of 30 minutes each time.

I’ve written a full blog post on this topic, read it here: How Often Should You Do Yoga – A Guide

  • What if I need more instruction?

At this time we do not offer one on one training, either in person or virtually. Creating new content and adding to our Workout Library is one of our main goals. That being said, we have a very active, private Man Flow Yoga Community Facebook Group. It’s a wonderful resource if you have any questions or need encouragement. We are also just one email away, so feel free to contact us at any time!

We do want to remind you that any advice you find online, especially concerning an injury or medical condition, should be taken with careful consideration.

  • Do you have any live classes, online or in person, available?

At this time we do not have live classes, online or in person. All of our content is pre-recorded. We’re constantly creating new content and adding to our Workout Library regularly.

  • What kind of diet should I follow in order to get the most out of Man Flow Yoga?

There are many diets that effectively complement Man Flow Yoga training programs, and they depend on your physical goals. We have a Wellness Library within our Training Tools with a lot of valuable information. For further comprehensive diet tips, you may be interested in purchasing Dean’s The Man Flow Yoga Diet or Dinner & a Workout: The Man Flow Yoga Cookbook e-books in our store: ManFlowYoga.com/ebooks

  • Do I need any equipment for these programs?

It is recommended that you have a yoga mat, a block, and a strap. Yoga mats can be purchased for usually less than $20 at superstores or online, but I recommend purchasing a premium mat when you are ready to make yoga a serious part of your fitness routine. Blocks and straps can each be purchased for less than $10 each, but a block can be replaced by a stack of books, and a belt can substituted for a strap.

Visit the “Equipment” section of our online Shop for yoga gear.

  • How do I use the Search?

Search Tips (Get Started Series) – Watch the Video

There are a few different categories to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. You can filter your search with the following criteria:

    • Text search: looks for matching text in the title or description of the workout
      • So if type in “back” and hit search, you’ll be presented with any piece of content that has the word “back” in the title, or in the description.
    • Skill Level: yoga experience
      • Refers to your overall yoga skill, does NOT mean your fitness level.
    • Duration: length of the workout; how long is it.
    • Target Area: the body part on which you’re focusing
      • Upper body, lower body, full body, or core
    • Fitness Focus: fitness aspects covered in the workout
      • Mobility, strength, balance, recovery, etc
    • Intensity: How hard your body will work.
      • This is different from skill level, as a workout can be very intense, but still beginner from a skill perspective
  • I just finished a challenge, What’s next? (After The Challenge)

There are plenty of structured workout programs with schedules to help you stay consistent and continue to notice results. So whether you’re looking to ramp up the intensity, keep it the same, or take it down a notch and work on your other workouts, there’s a great program for you that’s all ready to go.

    Recommended Programs

There are over 40 workout programs in the Members’ Area. Rather than explain each one of them (you’re welcome to go to the Programs’ section and take a look at each, if you’d like) I’m giving you 5 specific recommendations here.

Each of these programs has a flexible schedule you can follow (3-6 days per week), clear instructions on how to use the program, and – most importantly – delivers results!

The Clark Workouts – This is a solid series of 30-minute workouts that are great for overall strength and mobility. This is something that you can easily do on a daily basis, even if you’re not feeling that great. Perfect as a complement to your other workouts without draining you.

Yoga Beast 2.0 – Ready to take it up a notch [again]? The Yoga Beast 2.0 is my most intense yoga program. Workouts are 40+ minutes in length, and each workout is at least a 4 out of 5 intensity. This is great if you’re looking for more challenging yoga workouts.

Bulletproof Your Shoulders – Want to take care of your shoulders and work on your upper body? This program is basically my blueprint for healthy shoulders. It’s a fantastic, comprehensive program combining yoga with resistance training to strengthen your rhomboids, traps, rotator cuff, and entire upper-back and shoulder area. It also includes a decent amount of leg and core work.

Strength Foundations Course – Run through it one more time! It takes your body time to adjust to new workouts, and Strength Foundations is no exception.

Beyond Strength Foundations – More intensity, less time. These workouts are intense, great for the intermediate or advanced, and will still leave you with time (though maybe not as much energy) for your other workouts.

Check out each of these in the MFY Members’ Area in the Programs section. (If you’re not already a Member, you’ll have access to all of these programs when you join!)

    Advice for Choosing a Program

Most of our programs are universal in the sense that they’ll help you, no matter what your goals are. But you can always get a bit more specific and make sure that you’re making the best use of your time.

Our programs also have flexible schedules (for the most part). That means that you can 6 workouts per week, or you can do 2-3 workouts per week, if that’s all you have time for. The big difference is in the workout duration. Some are 20-30 minutes per day, some in the 30-40 minute range (like the SFC), and others in the 40-60 minute range (such as Yoga Beast 2.0).

You want to be realistic – do you have 45+ minutes every day for a workout? How many days per week? What other workouts do you plan on doing, and what can you realistically do when combining with your other workouts? You should be able to write out your workout schedule and think, “yes, this looks manageable”.

Keep in mind, you can always stop a program and move on to something else if it isn’t working for you. My recommendation here is to evaluate every week whether or not the workout program you’re following is appropriate. If that week didn’t go well, play around with the spacing of the workouts. Do 3 instead of 5, or 5 instead of 3. If you try again and it’s still not working out for you, head back to the Programs section and find another program.

Lastly, I recommend that you choose the program that makes you the most excited. If you’re not looking forward to the program you’re following, your motivation will be low. We want to make sure that you’re as motivated as possible, and if there is one program that is more motivational than others for you, then you should do that one! Consistency is the number one goal when it comes to a successful exercise routine.

  • I’m currently injured. Can I use the Members’ Area?

    The answer is “it depends”.

If you have a serious injury, you’ll probably have to talk with a medical professional to make sure that you can exercise. My recommendation is to avoid anything that could make your current injury worse, and be very aware of what is too much for you if it starts to reach that point.

If you have general pain or discomfort, but you are still able to go about your day-to-day tasks, then you are not injured. You have a weakness or a lack of mobility that needs to be addressed, and you should be doing mobility and strength-focused exercise (essentially, what you’ll find in Man Flow Yoga) to address that.

Disclaimer: I am not a licensed medical professional – and even if I were one, you would still need in-person attention to evaluate your specific situation, accurately diagnose your pain or injury, and then prescribe you a plan for recovery.

To get professional advice, my recommendation would be to find a GOOD physical therapist (somebody with a doctorate) in your area who believes in exercise-based rehabilitation (not just getting massages, heat treatment, or ice). You need to exercise in order to strengthen your body, recover from injury, and address the weakness that caused the injury in the first place.
