Better Back Yoga: The Program to Relieve Chronic Back Pain

I’m very excited to announce the release of my newest program from Body By Yoga – Better Back Yoga!

Better Back Yoga is a very beginner-friendly program featuring two 20-minute routines and one 10-minute routine to relieve chronic back pain and treat it at the source. It’s ideal for anybody who is currently suffering from chronic back pain – and best of all, you don’t (and shouldn’t) wait until back pain goes away to use this. You can start it right away.

The goals of this program are to:

  • Relieve day-to-day back pain
  • Strengthen the weaknesses that cause back pain
  • Prevent back pain in the future

Who Is “Better Back Yoga” For?

If you’re someone that suffers from daily chronic back pain, then this program is for you. There are many causes for back pain, but most can be solved with the workouts and exercises found in this program.

This program is a combination of yoga & physical therapy meant to build the necessary strength and mobility to address the root causes of back pain.

What Causes Back Pain?

Most back pain is caused by these 4 main factors:

  • Hip weakness
  • Hip tightness
  • Lack of core strength
  • Lack of spinal mobility

How Do We Address These Causes?

Getting rid of your back pain is more than just stretching your back, which is why this program covers more than just reaching down to your toes. Yes, stretching is important to relieve back pain but most people use the wrong stretches.

To address this, Better Back Yoga focuses on stretching all sides of your hips that directly affect back pain – adding slack into your body’s system and relieving tension.

After you’re comfortable with this step in the program, we focus on strengthening your core on the side that most affects you – flexion or extension (round or arching the spine).

Together these routines will help you develop the strength and mobility needed to stop, prevent, and be free of chronic back pain.

How to Use The DVD?

The important thing to know about back pain is that it’s caused by many things, and what helps one person might be the exact opposite of what somebody needs.

Keep this in mind for each of the exercises in the routine, and if you experience a medium level of discomfort or beyond, reassess whether or not you should do the pose. In general, stick to the following concept: If it hurts, don’t do it.

As you progress and continue to do the exercises in this routine, and exercise in general, you’ll notice that exercises that used to hurt you might not hurt that much anymore – or at all.

However, it is also important to understand that if you have been dealing with chronic back pain for months or years, or are recovering from injury, some exercises could and likely will be uncomfortable.

This is not a bad thing – it’s up to you to develop the intuition of whether or not an exercise is hurting or helping you. An easy way to do this is to see how you feel in the days afterward.

The Two-Step Program in Better Back Yoga

There are 4 routines, which are meant to be used as a system to take you from regular or infrequent back pain to completely pain-free.

Gentle Stretching – Tension Release For Back Pain Relief

A 20-minute, gentle spinal recovery is appropriate for those who have stiffness or back pain, and would like to get rid of tension and discomfort while also addressing muscle tightness that aggravates the spine. This helps with immediately addressing back pain, but on its own will not solve the root causes of back pain.

Gentle Strengthen – Extension/Flexion

Two gentle strengthening routines, 20-minutes in length, to build strength and increase flexibility, while simultaneously relieving back pain and addressing the root causes to prevent it from happening again.

For some people, certain exercises in which you round your back (called “spinal flexion”), are beneficial and cause no pain, while for others, the same exercises can cause pain. On the other hand, exercises in which you arch your back can cause no pain or discomfort in some, but be painful or uncomfortable for others.

Bonus – 10 Minute Routine to Help with Immediate Back Pain Relief

A shorter, 12-minute routine for immediate back pain relief, ideal for people who have chronic back pain and need a quick fix to get rid of pain or discomfort and get on with their day.
