I recently took an unexpected step through my ceiling, twisting my knee and rolling my ankle in the process.
If this had happened 12 years ago, I immediately would have popped an ibuprofen to stop the inflammation in its tracks. But something in me said that wasn’t the right move this time around. I decided to take my newfound knowledge of injury recovery and contrast it with what I used to do back in the day.
For decades, the undisputed standard for athletic injuries was RICE:
- Rest
- Ice
- Compression (maybe)
- Elevation
This is what’s known as “RICE”, and when I was an athlete in high school and college, it was the gold standard of treatment for injuries like the one I had in my little accident earlier.
Now things are different (and I’m not just talking about math).
Modern injury recovery isn’t about inhibition; it’s about active recovery.
Instead of freezing the healing process, the updated approach centers on an acronym called PEACE:
This is actually a new one to me, though it reflects most of what I already knew about recovery.
- Protect & Load Gently
- Elevate
- Avoid anti-inflammatories
- Compress
- Educate / Manage Pain Mindfully
Here is the exact playbook I used to recover from my ceiling accident instead of relying on the old rules:
- Avoided anti-inflammatories: I skipped the NSAIDs like ibuprofen to let my body’s natural inflammatory response run its course. That initial inflammation is actually what signals tendon repair and drives long-term recovery.
- Promoted circulation: I used a Normatec compression device from Hyperice to boost blood flow to the area—effectively flushing the old gunk out and bringing fresh nutrients in.
- Continued to walk (as pain allowed): Instead of sitting on the couch all day doing absolute nothing, I kept moving within a safe range of motion.
- Elevated and rested intentionally: I broke up periods of light activity with actual rest, elevating my leg above my heart (lying down completely, not just propping my leg up in a chair).
The paradigm has shifted from shutting down your body’s signals to working alongside them.
How does this change your previous conceptions of injury recovery?
